ratings 52 books plus my tastes main index
I review most of the books I read, sometimes for friends, sometimes for a wider group on my LiveJournal. This can include e-books as well as the things that pile up at the top of the stairs and threaten to fall over if they aren't read by next Tuesday. Occasionally I review films or plays. I might, from time to time, write an appraisal of someone's fanfic if I think it has particular merit. I don't imagine you will like all the books I like, but you might find it helpful to know what at least one person thought!
Don't tell me these reviews are unpublishable. I know that. They were never meant as serious journalism, just as notes for friends.
It has occurred to me that it might help if I give some idea of books I recommend highly, by rating them in the index for each genre. I have used smiley faces (up to three) to indicate books I want everybody to go and read! I have also added a 'cool' smiley (with shades) if the book has GLBT friendly content, explicit or otherwise, as I know some of my readers will have dome here via either slash fanfic or the GLBT zines I'm connected with, and might want to know...
In 2006 I joined a community on LiveJournal called womeninprint. This is not a link, as the community is in some kind of hibernation! It was set up by a friend of mine and the aim was to read and review 52 books by women authors in the course of the year. This slanted my reading somewhat. The community is virtually defunct because the moderator is working abroad with limited internet access, but it certainly kick-started my reviewing habits.
I now keep a computer diary of all the books I have read - a list that starts in January 2006. These are the books reviewed here. I have also given lists of my favourites in each genre but unless I read or re-read the book recently, there are no in-depth reviews.
It has dawned on me, in the course of compiling these lists, how many of the books I really like appeal on all sorts of different levels and are perhaps not completely classifiable within defined genres. Fantasies that address politics, histories that are thrillers, children's books that are hilariously funny at any age - these are the kind of books I enjoy and return to again and again. I originally started a section for 'unclassifiable' but found most of the books I would recommend heading that way! So I deleted it.
If you would like to discuss or comment on any of these, please leave a comment here, but remember to specify which book or section you are referring to!
Within each section, the reviews are linked under the names of authors. This gives me the chance to keep some sort of alphabetical control, and also enables me to add more books by the same author, without problems.
